THINGS TO DO
The things worth doing in Kotor, from the obvious landmarks to the ones locals actually rate.
Aerial view of Kotor old town's red rooftops and the bay
San Giovanni fortress climb
The icon: 1,350 steps zigzagging to a ruined fortress 280m above the roofs. Allow two hours return and carry water.
Kotor Cats Museum
One eccentric room of feline prints, postcards and lithographs. Takings go towards feeding the Old Town's famous street cats.
Ladder of Kotor to Krstac
The free back way out of town: 72 mule-track switchbacks to a 940m pass. Three to six hours return, no gate, no crowds.
Fort Vrmac from Muo
Forested stone switchbacks climb from the water to an abandoned Austro-Hungarian fort with bay views on both sides.
Roman mosaics at Risan
Twenty minutes up the bay, a 2nd-century villa holds Montenegro's finest mosaic floor, including a rare sleeping Hypnos.
